What Makes the BACKHUS CON Special?

The BACKHUS CON enables an optimal symbiosis of two proven Eggersmann technologies. The BACKHUS turning technology is combined with the CONVAERO system in a highly automated process.

  • The CONVAERO system is based on biological drying or composting in paved lanes with an aeration and drainage system. The special CONVAERO membrane creates a closed system that can be adjusted to suit drying or composting. This allows water to escape through the membrane, but prevents new water from entering. Emissions such as odors are also retained by the membrane.
  • The BACKHUS CON are designed in such a way that they move along the outside of the lanes with the undercarriages and simultaneously turn the material inside the lane. In doing so, they wind up the membrane at the front and unwind a new one at the back. Together with a unique encapsulation, this creates a quasi closed system. Winding, unwinding and turning are automated. The BACKHUS CON does not have a cabin.

  • The BACKHUS CON and the CONVAERO system are also part of our Eggersmann FUEL process for more sustainable substitute fuel. Biological drying with the CONVAERO system reduces the water content in the biomass of municipal solid waste. This turns the biomass from an interfering material into a fuel. The net calorific value is increased.

LANE TURNER LT

Lane Turners for Closed Facilities

What Makes the LANE TURNER Special?

The LANE TURNER LT are lane turners for working in open, high lanes. They are the perfect solution for turning in closed buildings.

The treatment of waste, such as the composting of organic waste or the biological drying of household waste, is connected with strong odors. Especially in densely populated areas, the use of processes inside closed buildings is therefore recommended. The LANE TURNER was designed precisely for this purpose. Due to the high lane walls, they are particularly suitable for the treatment of sewage sludge or soil remediation. Especially when treating contaminated soil, reinfection of the material can be safely avoided. While the BACKHUS CON travels along the outside of the lanes when turning, the LANE TURNER travels directly on the lane walls. Thanks to proven sensor technology, there is no need for rail-based guidance. The LANE TURNER LT is available either with a spacious panoramic cabin for the driver or fully automated. They can be used both in a flow through and batch operation.

What Exactly is Composting and How Does it Differ From Biological Drying?

Even if the assumption is close, composting does not necessarily always aim at the creation of "compost" in the sense of a marketable product. Basically, the word "composting" describes the natural transformation of organic material into humus by bacteria in a rotting process. If this "compost" has a high degree of purity, it can ultimately be used as fertiliser. However, materials are often composted for which later use as fertiliser can be ruled out from the outset. Household waste, for example, often contains a high organic content that can hardly be separated from the rest of the waste – yet composting or biological drying is recommended for the following reasons alone:

  • Volume
Waste with a non-composted organic content has a much higher volume, which makes landfilling more difficult. In addition to processing the material with shredders, etc., regular turning is therefore also one of the efficient methods for decisively reducing the volume.
  • Energy Expenditure
Non-recyclable waste such as residual waste is largely treated thermally. The biofractions contained therein consist to a large extent of water, and the high moisture content therefore increases the energy demand during incineration. Biological drying with a membrane or complete composting before thermal treatment is therefore often more cost-effective.
  • Temperature
During composting, temperatures of up to 65 degrees are generated. If municipal waste is not treated before landfilling, uncontrolled composting takes place. The landfill then heats up considerably and hazardous pollutants can escape in combination with the other waste.
  • Gases
Controlled composting with turners also produces C02, but landfilling untreated material is many times more harmful to the climate. Especially in cavities sealed off from the oxygen supply, methane and nitrous oxide are quickly produced. This can be prevented by regular turning.
